The easiest beach to attach to an East African safari
And the one most often attached badly — three nights, arriving exhausted, leaving before anything registers.
The logistics
Zanzibar has an international airport served by short hops from the Tanzanian safari circuits and from Nairobi, as well as direct flights from further afield.
The move takes half a day rather than most of one, which is unusually good by East African standards and is the main reason the island has become the default end to a Tanzanian trip.
It is a separate immigration formality from mainland Tanzania. This surprises people who assume it is domestic; it is quick, and it is worth knowing so that nobody is caught out with an expired single-entry situation.

The transition nobody plans for
A safari is early mornings, open vehicles, dust, a schedule and a great deal of looking. A beach is none of those things.
Going straight from one to the other in a single morning is more of a jolt than people expect, and the first two beach days are frequently spent decompressing rather than enjoying anything.
A night in Stone Town in between fixes it neatly — a different kind of stimulation, a change of pace, and somewhere to do laundry properly before a week of swimming.
Which order
Safari first, beach second, almost always. The safari is the part that needs energy and tolerates jetlag least well, and the beach is the part that repairs both.
The exception is a trip with a fixed permit or a migration window that falls late — then the beach goes first and the safari finishes the trip, which works fine and simply means flying home tired.
Packing, briefly
Safari luggage and beach luggage are different, and the light aircraft limits on the safari half are the constraint.
Leave a bag at your first hotel in Nairobi, Arusha or Dar and collect it on the way through. Every transit hotel offers this and most do not charge. It is a small arrangement that removes a real irritation.
The other beach options
The Kenyan coast is the obvious alternative and is an hour from Nairobi rather than a hop from Arusha, so it usually follows a Kenyan safari as naturally as Zanzibar follows a Tanzanian one.
Pemba and Mafia are quieter, harder to reach and better for divers. Neither is the right answer for a first visit with four nights to spend.
